Six months ago, I never would have guessed that I would have a desire to launch my own website, let alone a blog. I earned my degree nearly a year ago, and since then I've felt that my life was lacking something meaningful. It was about three months ago I discovered what it was.
I wanted to have a voice.
What exactly do I mean by that? I wanted to meet new people, get involved in more hobbies, and use my talents at the same time. My favorite talent is writing, so how could I incorporate that using those three elements? For a while I thought it was only possible to accomplish this by working at an agency or publishing a book. Obviously I was a tad bit in over my head with that kind of thinking.
Months and months went by where I was simply working but not really living. Finally, at my first big girl job, I received the best advice that is relevant to my life right now. My supervisor saw that I was struggling to write a cover letter for a client. What did she tell me that was so helpful?
Just start writing.
I used to think I had to have all my notes organized and prepared before I began writing. Every assignment I was given took hours of critical thinking; sometimes, that only produced a thesis sentence or a handful of incomplete thoughts. Once I followed her advice, my writing came so much easier. The words began to flow, and they haven't really stopped since.
After participating on a few Twitter chats, following some blogs, and reading articles off Pinterest, the epiphany of all epiphanies finally struck me.
Use your writing talents to bring meaningfulness to your life.
Those were my exact words I thought to myself. But my next thought was, how? I knew I wanted to not only improve my own life, but perhaps, given the opportunity, I could help other twentysomethings too. Feeling inspired by Twitter interactions and blog how-to's, I decided to give my own blog a go.
One last question I had to answer before I began this new quest was, what will my blog be about? For me it had to be about my passion and being helpful. My personal equation finally had a solution: passion + helpfulness = career advice. Let me explain.
I love PR. I love communications. I love digital marketing.
Truly I enjoy this industry very much. The changing trends, the use of technology, the thought bubbles of creativity...it all fascinate me. Unfortunately the downside to this industry is that it's so tough "getting your foot in the door." I knew that coming into it, and I want to do everything I can to possibly make the road a little smoother for the rest of the up and coming PR hopefuls out there.
So there you go! That's my reasoning for being here. I plan on publishing a "Tip of the Week" post on Wednesday, and longer articles every two weeks or so. Hey, this is my blog, and I'm still learning the ropes. This will be a learning experience for me, and I hope it will be learning experience for you too!
